Changes to the motorcycle law next year - The E.U. Third Directive. Getting your licence will become harder!
What this means to you...

EU Third Directive

The DSA has confirmed that the E.U. third directive (2006/126/EC) will be implemented on the 19th of January 2013. Getting your licence will become harder.

The main changes are:

  • You cannot take Direct Access until you are 24 and below this age you cannot have access to too powerful machines straight away. You will have to go through ‘Progressive Access’.
  • The A2 licence will not automatically upgrade to an unrestricted one after two years and you will need to sit another test to lift the restrictions. To gain an A2 licence you will need to use a 395cc bike, not a 125cc as you can now.
  • Category P will now become category AM
  • The EU Commission has clarified the minimum specification for the powered two wheels that can be used on test from this date.
