Motorcycle Theory Test FAQs

Everybody since February 2001 has to pass a motorcycle theory test.

Even if you have held a full car licence for many years, you will still need to take and pass a motorcycle theory test.

The only exceptions to this rule are holders of bike licences who want to upgrade within the same category.

To arrange a theory test, please contact the Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) on 0300 200 11 22 or book online.

You will need to take the following items with you to the test centre.

  • Your appointment letter
  • Your UK licence
  • If you have an old-style paper licence you must take both your paper licence and a valid passport

If you do not take the correct documents with you on the day, you will not be able to take your test and you will lose your fee.

If you do not hold any licence, licence applications forms can be collected from larger Post Offices (form D1) or ordered from DVLA (the UK licensing authority) via telephone on 0300 790 6801, or alternatively you can order one online by clicking here.

If you hold an EU licence but do not have a UK counterpart (D91) showing provisional motorcycle entitlement (under additional UK provisional entitlement), then you will need to telephone DVLA on 0300 790 6801 and ask them for a D9 form.

If your licence is from outside the EU and you are able to swap it to a UK licence then you will need form D1. To find out if you can swap your licence for a UK one if you are from outside the EU, please visit the following page www.gov.uk/exchange-foreign-driving-licence

For all fee information and a wealth of other licensing information please visit the GOV.uk site here or call the DVLA on 0300 790 6801.

To book a motorcycle theory test, the easiest way is to book online. Alternatively, you can telephone the Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) on 0300 200 11 22.

You will need to have your driving licence number from your licence and a method of payment.

You need to allow about one and a half hours at the theory test centre. To sit both parts of your test will take approximately one hour.

Your report, to say how you have done, will be available approximately thirty minutes after that.

The theory test certificate is valid for two years from the date of issue.

In short, yes. The motorcycle and car theory tests are different. The difference is in the multiple-choice part of the test where ten percent of the questions on the motorcycle theory test are specifically motorcycle related. The hazard perception part is the same for both.

There are several theory test centres dotted around the metropolitan area. When you go to book your theory test, it lists the centres closest to you. At the time of writing, the nearest theory test centres to Wembley are as follows:
